Estonian labour law — what every employer must know

Estonia's Employment Contracts Act (töölepinguseadus) gives employees strong protections. Getting it wrong can be costly. We make sure your contracts and HR processes are compliant from the start.

Frequently asked questions

How is the recruitment fee calculated?
The recruitment fee equals one month's gross salary of the hired candidate, with a minimum charge of €1,500. For example, if you hire someone at €2,500 gross/month, the fee is €2,500. All fees are quoted and confirmed in writing before we start the search.
Can I use just one service without the full recruitment package?
Yes — every service is available independently. If you only need employment contracts drafted, or just want us to screen your existing candidate pool, you can engage that single service. There's no obligation to use multiple services together.
Do you handle hiring for remote employees working outside Estonia?
Yes. We can draft remote work agreements compliant with both Estonian law and, where relevant, the employee's home country. For cross-border employment we recommend a consultation to address tax residency and social security implications.
What is the EMTA employee registration and who does it?
EMTA (Estonian Tax and Customs Board) requires every employer to register a new employee before their first day of work. Failure to register on time results in fines. We handle this registration as part of our full recruitment or contract service.
Can you help if we need to terminate an employee?
Yes. Termination in Estonia must follow strict procedures — correct notice periods, valid grounds, and proper documentation. We advise on the correct process and can draft the required termination paperwork to minimise legal risk.
Do you work with both local Estonian candidates and international hires?
Yes. We source both local Estonian candidates and international talent. For non-EU hires, additional work permit and residence permit steps apply — we guide you through these requirements as part of the recruitment process.
